CAUCUS 101 - A GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS

WHICH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT IS RYAN RUNNING IN?
• Ryan is running for United States Congress in Congressional District 7 (CD 7). Visit www.comaps.org/distus07.html to view a map of the district.

NOMINATING A CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE: HOW DOES IT WORK?
• The Republican nominees for Congress are not formally nominated until your Congressional District Assembly is held in May, 2010.

WHAT IS A CAUCUS?
• A caucus is simply a neighborhood gathering of Republicans like yourself.

• Another term used for caucus is ‘precinct caucus’.

• Your neighborhood caucus will take place this year on MARCH 16th at 7:00pm. You should be there 15 minutes early in order to be properly credentialed.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE PRECINCT CAUCUS?
• A vote will be held to determine your preferred candidates for this election year.

• Attendees will elect delegates and alternates to the next step: county and district assemblies.

WHAT IS A DELEGATE?
• A delegate is a person who has attended a neighborhood gathering called a precinct caucus and is chosen by other caucus attendees to attend a county or district assembly on their behalf.

• Delegates vote for their preferred candidate at both the County and Congressional District assemblies, respectively.

• Delegates are an integral and critical part of the election process.

WHAT IS AN ALTERNATE?
• An alternate is simply a person who is elected to attend in a delegate’s place in the case the delegate is unable to attend or vote at an assembly.

CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT DELEGATES: HOW ARE THEY CHOSEN?
• On March 16th, Republicans will attend neighborhood gatherings called precinct caucuses to elect delegates to their county assembly.

• At the county assemblies (dates vary by county - there are 3 counties in CD 7), attendees will elect delegates to go to the district assembly.

• At the 7th Congressional District assembly held in May, delegates will elect their nominee for the primary ballot in August.

PRECINCTS: WHAT ARE THEY?
• A precinct is a geographic area of voters organized by neighborhood. Your precinct is one of a fixed number of districts into which your county is divided for voting purposes.

• Colorado’s 7th Congressional District has 384 precincts. The typical precinct in CD 7 contains 1,000 registered Republican voters.
