Sportsmen

Hunters and fisherman have been the driving force behind America’s conservation movement since championing its inception over a century ago. Creation of the conservation movement resulted from a commitment by sportsmen-conservationists, such as Theodore Roosevelt, to utilize their knowledge of science and public policy to reverse the wanton exploitation of wildlife and its habitat by promoting the adoption of a simple philosophy: America’s economic and social health results from our rich and unique natural treasures which should be protected and conserved for future generations.

I believe a science based approach should be utilized to shape natural resources policy in the twenty-first century as it did in the twentieth century. For example, recent studies have begun to quantify the many benefits of hunting, fishing and other forms of outdoor recreation for addressing childhood obesity and developing important educational skills that benefit young people throughout their lives. As a veteran, I have also been excited to see the emergence of programs that utilize hunting and fishing to assist in healing the physical and psychological wounds of our military personnel and veterans.

There are also tremendous social benefits that result from hunting and fishing. For example, hunting and fishing provides an opportunity for people of all races, ethnicities, socioeconomic classes and political affiliations to leave their differences at the door and come together, united by a shared passion for the outdoors. In addition, outdoor recreation provides opportunities for families to escape the distractions of everyday life to spend quality time together.

In Congress, I will work across party lines to provide opportunities to hunt and fish for people who don’t currently have the means or ability to participate in outdoor recreation. I will work to ensure increased access to public lands and fisheries and I will combat, at every turn, efforts to needlessly restrict or reduce hunting and fishing access. I will develop and support legislation that protects and conserves wildlife and its habitat and I will tirelessly defend the right of all Americans to utilize firearms for hunting, recreational shooting, self protection and the defense of our nation.

I appreciate the many benefits to our nation that result from hunting and fishing and will work to ensure that the interests of sportsmen-conservationists, and the wildlife they pursue, have an unwavering advocate in Congress.
